For the third year, run through the fair like a madman during VAVi’s San Diego County Fair 5k. Get there before crowds are allowed in for a race course winding through Ferris wheels and thrill rides. Tickets include admission to the fair that day and a free beer, so stick around after the race to ride the rides and refuel with funnel cakes.  Visit their webpage for more information.  The actual San Diego County Fair runs from June 3rd – July 4th.

5TH ANNUAL AMERICAN FREEDOM FESTIVAL

 

San Diego, CA (March 31, 2014) — The American Freedom Foundation announces the 5th Anniversary of the American Freedom Festival San Diego concert event. The annual charity event will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 7:30 pm featuring the ultimate classic rock all-star band, World Classic Rockers. The concert, held annually aboard the historic USS MIDWAY MUSEUM, was a sell out last year! As a result, the Museum is moving planes around on the flight deck to accommodate an additional 400 seats for concertgoers.

World Classic Rockers is being brought back by popular demand and features former members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steppenwolf, Journey, Boston and Santana performing such classic rock hits as: BORN TO BE WILD, MORE THAN A FEELING, SWEET HOME ALABAMA, BLACK MAGIC WOMAN, SEPARATE WAYS, DON’T LOOK BACK, FREE BIRD, MAGIC CARPET RIDE, GIMME THREE STEPS, ROCK ‘N ROLL BAND, FREE BIRD, ANYWAY YOU WANT IT, WHAT’S YOUR NAME, HERE I GO AGAIN, and more!

Over the last four years, American Freedom Festival San Diego has raised approximately $120,000 for local San Diego military charitable organizations. This year the event will benefit San Diego Armed Service YMCA, Wounded Warrior Support Network, ReBoot Workshops and Nice Guys Victory Fund. Further doing great work for our local community, the American Freedom Foundation will also hold their annual Warriors To The Workforce Hiring Event for veterans, transitioning military service members and their spouses on Friday, May 23 in the Hangar Deck of the USS Midway Museum.

Whether you’re new to San Diego or have lived here for years, one event you can’t help, but take part in is the San Diego County Fair. 24 days of food, fun, and festivities for all ages.

Bring the family out to get up close and personal with farm animals and farm equipment. You can even watch some of these animals compete for prizes. Get your picture taken with a giant pig or pet a goat.

If animals aren’t your thing, there’s plenty of shopping throughout the fair. You’ll get great discounts on all kinds of items and can even enter to win great prizes and coupons at some of the vendor booths. Get tips on how to care for your houseplants and stock up on handmade goods before the holiday rush.

Play games, win prizes, and ride on classic fair attractions such as the ferris wheel, meery go round, and more.

It wouldn’t be the fair without fair food. Grab a funnel cake, try some fried bacon, snack on popcorn, fries, and chicken strips, or check out some of the healthier options on hand. The wine and beer festivals and tastings are always a big hit during the fair. This year, there’s even a bacon festival for all you meat-lovers.

San Diego’s premier equestrian event is back! Now in its 68th year, this a chance for San Diego residents to see some of the county’s best riders and horses, including several Olympic team members and other international equestrian stars.

April 18th-21st: Western Week

Dust off your cowboy boots and rustle up your hat: the old west is back. From western pleasure classes to reining, to trail competitions and barrel racing, come out and see some genuine American Quarter Horses compete to win. The highlight of this week is The Night of the Horse, a fantastic show on the order of Cavalia. Night of the Horse tickets are available, while the rest of the Western Week events are free to spectators.

April 25th-28th: Dressage Week

Unless you were living under a rock during last election season, you’ve heard of dressage. Mitt Romney’s wife, Anne, is a dressage rider and co-owner of Rafalca, a horse that traveled to London this past Olympics to compete in the highest level of the sport, Grand Prix, with her rider, Jan Ebling. Additionally, many members of the US Dressage team, past and present will be on hand to compete for the top prize in both the Grand Prix Special and Grand Prix Freestyle. The highlight of Dressage Week takes place on the 27th, The Evening of Musical Freestyles. Horse and rider pairs dance around the area to their own choreographed patterns and music. All other dressage events are free to spectators.

April 30th-May 5th: Hunter/Jumper Week

One of the most exciting sports, Hunter/Jumper week features a variety of different jumping events, open to riders and horses of all make and model. The premier event of the week is the Saturday night $10,000 Grand Prix jumping event. The stars are sure to be out during Hunter/Jumper week…catch several past and present Olympians in the competition line-up. As in the other weeks, all regular events are free to spectators.

Billed as the premier wine tasting event in Southern California, the VinDiego Wine and Food Festival showcases more than 300 offerings from over 75 California wineries. And that isn’t even all of it! It is, after all, called the Wine AND Food Festival. Some of San Diego’s best restaurants will be on hand, serving up some of their delicious culinary magic.

VIP Admission begins at 4pm, with general admission beginning at 5pm. The event runs until 8 that night. The beautiful glass windows of the Port Pavilion provide for a spectacular view of the sunset over the bay and Coronado in the distance.

Some of the participating wineries include Gnarly Head, Black Stallion, Incognito, Robert Mondavi, Bogle, and Seaglass.

There will also be a silent auction to benefit the non-profit charity, Freedom Station, an organization that helps wounded young Marines and Sailors transition back to civilian life. Some of the big ticket items include vacation packages, VIP winery tours, collectable wines, and more.

We’ve previously highlighted Restaurant Week, but here’s a new spin on it: Sustainable Seafood Week. The event’s purpose is to: “unites restaurants committed to bringing attention to the sustainable seafood movement”. All of the participating restaurants will be offering a prix fixe menu featuring different sustainable seafood options. As in restaurant, this gives patrons the chance to try out new restaurants and flavors, at a lower price.

Each of the participating restaurants will donate a portion of the proceeds to San Diego Oceans Foundation’s research and marine science education programs. The SDOF was founded in 1984.

Participating restaurants include some of our favorites like George’s California Modern, Via Italia Trattoria, Stone Brewery Bistro & Gardens, and Cafe Chloe, among others. Visit the site for the full list of restaurants and more information.

Hey winos, this event’s for you!

On February 7th at 6pm, the Cabrillo Advisors Foundation will be hosting an event for wine-lovers to benefit Rady Children’s Hospital and San Diego Social Venture Partners. The event is expected to draw over 300 wine enthusiasts. More than 30 top-rated California winemakers will also be attendance, with plenty of tasting samples for guests of the event. The Estancia’s chefs will prepare delicious food to accompany this night of wine. Live entertainment will be provided by Dawn Mitschele. Silent and live auctions will contain quality items, including some very big ticket offerings.

Rady Children’s Hospital is “is the county’s only dedicated pediatric care facility and trauma center”. San Diego Social Venture Partners is an organization that invests in non-profits.
