Design Trends: Carpet

Another classic home flooring choice is carpet. Carpet comes in a variety of styles, colors, patterns, and weaves. It feels nice underfoot and is ideal for lounging. But it requires more upkeep in the form of vacuuming and stain removal. If you have pets or children, it’s best to choose a darker color that doesn’t show the stains as well. Carpet can be used as a neutral, an accent, or as a statement by using a bold pattern.

Recipe: Grilled Chicken Tostadas

Grilled Chicken Tostadas

Ingredients:

Marinade:

½ c. fresh lime juice

¼ c. soy sauce

¼ c. vegetable oil plus more for bushing the tortillas

1 tbsp. honey

2 tsp. minced garlic

1 ½ tsp. chili powder

Tostadas:

6 boneless, skinless chicken thighs

8 small corn tortillas

1 ½ cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese, or more if desired

1 ½ cups shredded lettuce

Optional toppings:

Salsa, guacamole, sour cream, cilantro, green onions

Directions:

  1. Place the chicken thighs in a gallon-sized ziplock bag and add all the marinade ingredients. Press the air out of the bag and seal. Turn the bag to thoroughly coat the chicken. Place in a bowl and refrigerate at least four hours (preferably overnight).
  2. Remove chicken 20 minutes before you start grilling.
  3. Make a charcoal fire or set a gas grill to medium-high heat, close lid, and heat until hot, about 10-15 minutes.
  4. Remove thighs from bag and discard marinade. Grill the chicken until it’s no longer pink inside, about 4-5 minutes per side.
  5. Transfer chicken to a cutting board and let it rest for 5 minutes before cutting into ½ in. strips.
  6. Lightly brush both sides of the tortillas with vegetable oil. Grill each side until slightly brown, about one minute on gas grill. Before removing tortillas from grill, sprinkle each with 1 tbsp. cheese.
  7. Top with chicken and other ingredients.

Design Trends: Tile Flooring

Tile Flooring

Over the next few weeks, we will be covering different types of flooring for the home.

Tile is a traditional flooring material that is far from boring. Not only does it come in a range of colors and styles, but it also comes in a number of different materials. Tiles can be inexpensive or expensive, depending on how luxe you go. Tiles can be large or small or a combination of both. Some people like to create patterns with their tile, a mosaic, or simply have them all match. Some tiles are made to look like wood, making them another option to hardwood or laminate flooring. Tiling can be elegant and sophisticated or wild and whimsical. Tile is easy to clean, most just requiring some mopping and sweeping. Tiles can be cold though, so if you live in a cold place, you might want to consider some sort of warming mechanism underneath, especially in the bathrooms.

For breakfast, favorite offerings include the Strawberry Rhubarb Stuffed French toast with fresh bakery brioche and ricotta cheese, the Enchiladas and Eggs, Breakfast Polenta with creamy goat cheese and roasted tomato, as well as the Salmon Cake Benedict.

The best of the lunch menu would have to incorporate the Quinoa and Lentil Salad, their famous Sweet Potato Parmesan Fries with creamy bleu cheese dressing, the Roasted Lamb Sandwich, or the Chicken Caprese Sandwich with fresh mozzarella, pesto, and spicy tomato jam on a freshly baked ciabatta roll.

Finally, dinner is not complete without the Moroccan Chicken with roasted vegetable quinoa, the Corn and Zucchini enchiladas, as well as the Turkey Meatloaf with garlic mashed potatoes, seared French beans, and warm mushroom gravy.
