Located below street level on Prospect, this restaurant has the feel of dining in an older restaurant around the turn of the century. When they’re busy, it can be loud, but not awful. The outdoor patio is very comfortable, especially with the heat lamps.

The food is very, very good. The Smokey Mahi Tacos are absolutely delicious, if a bit small. For two people, they brought out two, street-sized tacos. The complexity of favors and perfection of the food made up for the small size, though we did wish we had more of them to eat.

The Braised Short Ribs were also amazing. So tender, flavorful, and juicy. We used the polenta side to mop up some of the juices and sauce from the ribs. The Black Angus Burger with Truffle Fries was also a standout. Juicy and so moist, just the right size to hold in your hand. All of the flavors and pieces were well combined and the burger wasn’t overstuffed to the point of falling apart. The fries were quite good, small and crispy, with just a hint of the Truffle oil.

They have a number of specialty drinks, as well as beers on tap and wines.

Service is good and the food comes out quickly, even on a busy Saturday night. But reservations are a must and make sure to bring a sweater if you don’t want to wait for a table inside. The portions of everything are on the small side, so make sure to order several dishes!

Design Trends: French Country

One design trend that never really seems to go out of style, is french country decor. The perfect mix of upscale elegance and comfortable patterns and accents, it’s rustic while still remaining sophisticated. While, blue, and pale distressed wood are one of the hallmarks of the furniture which often features intricate curves and lines. Toile, stripes, and plaids make up the bulk of the fabrics in this decidedly vintage look. French County style fits well in most homes with its warm and comfortable look.

The Baked Bear is definitely an ice cream shop that relies on a gimmick: ice cream cookie sandwiches. But in this case, the gimmick is pulled off spectacularly well, as evidenced by the fact that the shop always seems to be busy, no matter when you go there. Located on Mission Boulevard just off Garnet in Pacific Beach, it has quite the prime location.

Ice cream sandwiches can be made using two cookies, brownie, or waffles, or one of each. You can mix and match the flavors of the cookies to suit your ice cream and even add on an extra scoop or additional toppings pressed around the edge of the sandwich.

The baked goods are always soft and fresh and the ice cream is smooth, delicious, and not too frozen. The sandwiches are a bit messy, but what can you really expect?

You can also get an ice cream sundae or float.

There’s a new breakfast and brunch place in Carmel Valley, at the Del Mar Highlands shopping center. Always busy and open every day, they dish up plenty to be thrilled about.

Originally opened in Colorado, they’ve expanded the chain out to San Diego in recent years. They also have a location in Hillcrest.

Their specialties are of course the egg-centric dishes and the pancake dishes.

For the eggs: notable options include a wide variety of omelettes, the breakfast burrito, corned beef hash, huevos rancheros, a breakfast sandwich, and even breakfast tacos!

For the pancakes: they have a number of sweet pancake options on the menu, with one pancake of the day. If you can’t decide on just one, order the pancake flight and sample three! The pineapple upside down and carrot cake varieties are quite good! They also have plain, blueberry, and chocolate chip if you’re a bit less adventurous with your pancakes.

Additionally, they have french toast and a number of brunch options if you’re in the mood for lunchtime fare.

Juices, specialty coffees, and alcoholic morning beverages like mimosas and bloody marys round out the menu.

Come hungry, come early, and be prepared to wait, especially if you have a large party. They don’t take reservations or call ahead seating. Service is a bit slow since it’s always crowded, so it’s a great place to catch up with friends and family.
